12th Annual Award Recognizes Exceptional Academic Achievement In Pursuit of Career in Health Care
The Granville Health System Foundation today announced that Carmen Moore of Creedmoor and Cecily Claiborne of Oxford are the recipients of its 12th annual Sam Perry Scholarship Award. Ms. Moore, daughter of Edward and Sherri Moore, is a graduate of Falls Lake Academy and will be attending Averett University to major in Sports Medicine with plans to pursue a career in health care. Ms. Claiborne, daughter of Chris and Kelly Claiborne, is a graduate of Vance Charter School and will be attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to major in Biology and Pre-Med and plans to pursue a career in health care.
In 2009, the Granville Health System Board of Trustees and the GHS Foundation Board of Directors established a scholarship fund in honor of Sam Perry, a physician’s assistant whose specialized medical care earned him deep respect from both patients and peers throughout his career at Granville Health System, one of North Carolina’s leading rural hospitals.
“I am very grateful to receive the Sam Perry Scholarship Award and excited to pursue my career goal to become a physical therapist,” said Carmen Moore. “As a first step toward this goal, I plan to further my education by pursuing a Doctorate in Physical Therapy.”
“I’m so proud to be selected for the Sam Perry Scholarship Award and to honor his legacy by pursuing my career dream to become a physician,” said Cecily Claiborne. “My goal is to be an OB/GYN specializing in reproductive endocrinology.”
The Sam Perry Scholarship is awarded to Granville County residents who have been accepted into a two-year or four-year allied health program at an accredited school and who intend to pursue a career in the health care field. Programs eligible for this scholarship include various health-related specialties including, but not limited to, clinical laboratory sciences, physical therapy, occupational therapy, radiological science, pharmacy, RN, BSN, ADN, LPN, dentistry and related careers, physician, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner.
Throughout high school, Ms. Moore and Ms. Claiborne were involved in clubs, sports and extracurricular activities. Ms. Moore and Ms. Claiborne graduated from high school with a weighted GPA of 3.85 and 4.56, respectively. Ms. Moore is active in the community as a Recreation Coordinator with the City of Creedmoor, and Ms. Claiborne engages in community activity as a Student/Auxiliary Technician with Professional Pharmacy in Oxford.
The GHS Foundation is very pleased to honor Sam’s vision and commitment to the community by awarding this year’s Sam Perry Scholarship Award to Carmen Moore and Cecily Claiborne, each of whom exemplify the qualities of leadership, community volunteerism and academic discipline that will help them realize their health care career aspirations,” said James W. Crawford, Jr., a member of the Board of Directors of the GHS Foundation. “The Scholarship Committee was impressed by each of these recipients’ academic achievements, broad list of extracurricular activities and community engagement experiences which exceeded the criterion we look for as part of the Scholarship Award selection.”
Using established criteria, the GHS Foundation selected its 2022 Sam Perry Memorial Scholarship recipients in May 2022. A monetary award of one thousand dollars ($1,000.00) will be paid toward the recipient's tuition in August 2022, upon verification of acceptance into an approved program. This is a one-time scholarship, but individuals may reapply for as many years as they are in school.
